Explanation of the most common attack types

The attacks can be split in two: illegal (punishable by law)  and legal (law cannot be applied)

Most common illegal attacks:

  • DDos Attacks
  • Scrape Attacks

Most common legal attacks:

  • Link based Negative SEO
  • 404 Links Negative SEO

Please note: There are a number of other ways your site can be attacked both illegal and legal but the four stated above are the most common and the most dangerous ones.

The following types of attacks are illegal:

DDoS Attacks

What does it mean?

Your host/server is bombarded with millions of requests in a very short amount of time. Basically, the server becomes overloaded. No matter if we are talking about a shared hosting account or you host your sites on your own server, the results are the same:

What does it do to my site?

An DDoS attack is going to make the site either move really slow, or the server crashing hence your site will be down and returning a 404 error.

This is a common attack for sites that rely on selling products since their site being down means immediate loss in sales hence in profit.

Furthermore, a site that is down is going to be automatically dropped in Google rankings (and other search engine rankings as well) and if the site is down long enough it can get de-indexed.

Scrape attacks

What does it mean?

Meaning your content is copied and posted on millions of other sites, hence diluting the power of your site

What does it do to my site?

Google, when presented with duplicate content, will give more credit to the content that is older and on a more reputable site – so if the perpetrators change the date of your content to a previous time and post it on a number of more powerful sites you will lose rankings

Hacking your site

What does it mean?

Perpetrators will have access to the files on the server your site is stored one. Hence, they can control your site completely.

What does it do to my site?

In most cases perpetrators use a vulnerability of the platform your site is built on, and inject a piece of code that will either scramble your site, redirect your site to another location, link to spammy sites and such.

It is less common, but a perpetrator can delete your site’s files entirely hence making your site disappear out of the blue.

Either way, the result is always the same: loss of rankings in search engine and loss of business.

The following types of attacks are legal:

Link based negative SEO

What does it mean?

A number of shady backlinks are built in a short period of time and sent to your site. The links can be sent on “forbidden” keywords aka keywords that Google does not rank a site for or on keywords that you actually want to rank on but.

What does it do to my site?

While your actual site will be all good, the chance in link profile will mean that you will see a loss in rankings and your site is at danger from getting a Google Penalty and get de-indexed.

Link based 404 attack

What does it mean?

A lot of links are built on pages that do not exist on your site (hence your site will start to generate 404s when crawled) in an attempt to manipulate Google thinking that your site has more errors than it actually does.

What does it do to my site?

Again, this is a type of negative SEO attack that will lead to your site lose rankings in search engines (aka Google mostly) and can potentially lead to the de-indexation of your site.
